Two rejuvenated teams will lock horns on Saturday afternoon at St. James Park when Newcastle United will host Nottingham Forest in their 22/23 Premier League opener. The Tricky Trees will feature in a Premier League match for the first time in twenty-three years. Regardless of the result, it will be a big day for Nottingham Forest fans. Newcastle, on the other hand, were relegation favourites halfway through the 21/22 season. But, the change in ownership and an increased flow of funds helped them recoup their form and make a convincing 11th place finish. What are the top football betting tips for the clash between these two sides? Let’s find out.

Newcastle United

The midseason appointment of Eddie Howe was one of the first changes the new Newcastle hierarchy made. Howe, who had years of Premier League experience as the Bournemouth manager, did not take long to steady a sinking ship and steer the Tyneside outfit out of troubled waters.

Howe was fortunate to tap into the vast resources of the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which currently owns Newcastle. The source of the money is questionable, but Newcastle fans did not complain about seeing talents like Bruno Guimares and Kieran Trippier donning the black and white shirt.

But, it would be unfair to imply Newcastle finished the season strong only because of the deep pockets of their owners. Eddie Howe’s incredible managerial skill was intrinsic in gelling the team together and producing instant results. In the second half of the season, Newcastle outperformed 12 out of the other 19 Premier League sides. That’s incredible progress for a team that was fighting for its life only a few months prior.

Newcastle have continued their squad upgrade as they poached goalkeeper Nick Pope from Burnley and centre-back Sven Botman from Lille. Both of them are expected to make their Newcastle debut against Nottingham. The veteran Jonjo Shelvey and Javier Manquillo could be the only absentees in the Newcastle contingent.

Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have won all of the last three Premier League games they played. Only Liverpool and Tottenham can say they are about to start their new season with three wins out of their last three Premier League outings. Unlike Spurs and Liverpool, however, Nottingham played their last matches before the turn of the millennium.

It has been a long, painful top-flight exile for a club that has won two European Cups. When current manager Steve Cooper took over the club, they were nowhere near a return to the top. Rather, relegation to the third tier seemed like a highly probable scenario as the Reds had only one point on the board after seven games.

Cooper turned things around, and eight months fast forward, Nottingham Forest fans and players were rejoicing a historic play-off qualifier win over Huddersfield. The Nottingham Forest XI that played in that match will be an evergreen part of the club’s history. However, don’t expect to see a lot of them in action on Saturday.

To embrace the Premier League challenge, Nottingham Forest have made a dozen of signings. The likes of Wayne Hennessey, Dean Anderson, and Jessie Lingard come with significant Premier League experience. Neco Williams was one of the most exciting prospects coming out of the Liverpool academy. Taiwo Awoniyi, who came from Union Berlin, hit the target 15 times in the Bundesliga last season. Only five players managed to score more. As things stand, only Brennan Johnson and Joe Worrall might hold on to their spots in the Newcastle match among players who had featured in the playoff tie against Huddersfield.

Our Prediction

Nottingham Forest is an unknown entity in the Premier League. They had an excellent defensive record in the Championship, conceding only 12 goals in their final 21 outings. But, it would be hard to replicate that record in the Premier League. We foresee a 1-0 win for Newcastle.

Our Tip

Newcastle United to win @ 1.71
