SC Freiburg
2021/22 was a special season for SC Freiburg fans. After a quiet first half, Freiburg raced to a 3-0 lead at the WWK Arena less than 15 minutes into the second half. Ex-Augsburg forward Michael Greogritsch opened the scoring, and before Augsburg could settle, Vicenzo Grifo dealt another blow. Matthias Ginter and Ritsu Doan put the final nails on Augsburg’s coffin later on. Greogritsch and Doan were both debutants for Freiburg.
In their first 20 encounters with Borussia Dortmund, Freiburg won only twice. But, they bucked their losing trends against Dortmund in recent years, having won against them in both of their last two home matches. After grabbing the biggest opening day win in their Bundesliga history, there will be no short of optimism in the Freiburg camp ahead of the Dortmund clash.
Lukas Holer will not be involved as he is recovering from a broken ankle. Kevin Schade and Lukas Kubler are also injury concerns for the home side.
Borussia Dortmund
There were doubts whether or not he will be fit for Borussia Dortmund’s season opener, but the club’s captain fantastic Marco Reus did make the first XI and scored the decisive goal to give Borussia Dortmund a winning start to their campaign.
Bayer Leverkusen, who finished third in 21/22, was a stern test to have on the first day of the new Bundesliga season. But, Borussia Dortmund passed it with flying colours. The roaring Signal Iduna Park played an intrinsic part in the win as always.
Debutant Karim Adeyemi’s injury, however, somewhat marred the joy of such a crucial victory. The German youngster lasted only 23 minutes on the pitch as he struggled to continue after picking up a knock.
Adeyemi is the latest entry to the Dortmund medical room that is already dealing with the thigh injury of Niklas Süle. New signing Sebastien Haller will be out for months seeking chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular tumours.
Prediction
SC Freiburg is in excellent form lately, but Borussia Dortmund could be too hot for them to handle. BVB managed to see off a strong Bayer Leverkusen side and will be expecting to return with all three points from the Europa-Park Stadion. We call a 2-1 away for Borussia Dortmund.
