Antonio Conte had struggled in his early days as the new Tottenham manager. But, the ex-Chelsea boss inspired his new team to turn things around and waltz into the top four. He will hope his team picks up where they had left off last season when they welcome Ralph Hasenhüttl’s Southampton on Saturday afternoon. Are top football betting tips experts expecting an upset from the visiting side? Or just another day at the office awaits for Harry Kane and company at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium?
Tottenham have been very busy in the summer transfer window. They spent big to bring in Everton forward Richarlison and bolstered an already thriving attack. The recruitment of Yves Bissouma will add more steel to the midfield, and Djed Spence arrived from Middlesbrough to give Conte more options in the right-back area. The Lilywhites also registered Clément Lenglet, Ivan Perišić, and Fraser Forster on free transfers.
The signing of Ivan Perišić, in particular, could be one of the best deals in the summer. The Croatia international was one of the top performers for Inter Milan last season. But, the Serie A side did not want to hand a new contract to a 33-year-old player. So, Spurs snatched him up for free.
Over the last nine seasons, Tottenham have failed to win their opening day fixture on only three occasions. Also, Spurs have won six of their last seven home matches in the Premier League. So, the Lilywhites will go into this game as favourites.
Yves Bissouma might have to wait a bit longer to make his Tottenham debut as he is nursing a minor knock. Oliver Skipp’s involvement is also in doubt.
Southampton rarely looked like they would go down last season, but they could not do better than a 15th-place finish. The Saints can’t say they deserved better as they often seemed a team without any ambition and direction for most of the season. Also, Southampton’s pre-season preparations have been below par, as they managed to win only one of the five matches they played.
Southampton can’t draw inspiration from their record against Spurs, either. In their last 20 visits to Tottenham’s arena, Southampton have returned victorious only three times. They lost 15 and drew the other two games. Overall, Southampton have lost at Tottenham 17 times, their worst away record in the Premier League.
Southampton also have an opening day hoodoo to worry about. They failed to win the opening match of the season in their last 12 campaigns. No other teams currently participating in the Premier League have a worse opening day record than Tottenham.
Southampton have turned to youth in the summer transfer window. They bought Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu and Sékou Mara from Bordeaux. Both of them are 20 years old. The Hampshire club have also signed Joe Aribo from Rangers.
The head-to-head records, recent form, and transfer activities-all tip the balance of this tie in Tottenham’s favour. We expect Tottenham to win this match 3-0 and get off to a flying start in the Premier League.
